Agenda & Objectives
Conference Description
School health centers are the leading force within the health care safety net for ensuring that at-risk young people (5-18) have patient-centered medical homes in North Carolina. This program is designed to address contemporary and emerging health care issues for school-aged children and adolescents, especially the dominant factors in lifetime health: lifestyle choices about eating, activity, alcohol, drugs, and self-activation to manage stress and chronic conditions.
Target Audience
Physicians, NPs, PAs, Nurses, Social Workers, Psychological Associates, Health Educators, School Personnel, and others who want to learn more about school-based and school-linked health centers.
Conference Objectives
- Examine binge drinking, new areas of substance abuse, and treatment options.
- Discuss how school health centers fit into public education and methods to enhance that relationship. Examine the positive effects of yoga techniques in school health center treatments.
- Examine the latest recommendations on adolescent vaccines and methods to increase uptake of vaccines in school settings.
- Review the principles of an evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention model and how they can be applied to delivery of care in school health centers.
- Discuss methods of initiating and providing dental care in school health centers.
- Identify collaborations with NC HealthNet and the NC Center for Excellence for Integrated Care that will improve center operations and services.
- Recognize child abuse and neglect, including available resources for addressing the issue.
- Discuss how a case statement and friend-raising will build financial support for centers.
- Examine the state of school health centers from both the state and national perspective and the effects from health care reform.
